Rangers targets and their agents will have been paying attention to the fallout from Ianis Hagi’s situation before making any decisions on signing for the club, says Derek Ferguson.

Gheorghe Hagi has come out to slam the Light Blues over their “ugly” treatment of his son [Scottish Sun, 27 August], who has been frozen out into the B Team despite wanting to stay at the club [Football Scotland, 19 August].

Philippe Clement has told the Romanian international he can leave [Sky Sports, 12 August], but Hagi has instead rejected a move to Rapid Bucharest [Sky Sports, 26 August] and released a statement on Instagram (27 August) reaffirming his commitment at Ibrox.

Ferguson isn’t impressed by how the situation has been dealt with and feels prospective signings and their agents will be taking this into account when considering signing before the transfer window shuts.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “He had that bad injury, but he’s come back and he played in the Euros. He was decent, so he was, I watched a couple of the games. So his fitness isn’t an issue.

“I think players do look at that. They look to see how the club deal with certain players, and agents will look at that. So it’s a balancing act, they’ve got to be careful with that because it isnae a good look and I wasn’t surprised when his dad came out and was pretty vocal because it’s ending up a bit of a mess.

“We need good players, and I was speaking to a guy the other day who’s in the know a little bit, and he loves him in terms of his attitude. He’s shown a great attitude. So I think it can be dealt with a little bit better, that’s for sure.”

Philippe Clement has frozen Ianis Hagi out into Rangers B Team

Whether it is strictly true that the club are trying to force Hagi or not doesn’t even matter in the final days of the transfer window, because that is what it looks like and that is what prospective signings will see.

Clement has had enough trouble getting players in from a financial perspective this summer so if they are reticent because they are concerned the club won’t treat them well it will only make matters even harder in the final hours.

If the 25-year-old was open to a transfer it would have been one thing, but now he appears to have closed that door himself it surely requires some in-house negotiations to settle the contract clause thought to be at the base of the issue [Daily Record, 13].

Although whether that might be too little too late for the club’s image ahead of the deadline is another matter.

In other Rangers news, after making an offer worth over £6million the Light Blues are going to be busy right to the end of the window.
