Rangers already have “absolutely no chance” of overtaking Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race this season, according to Kris Boyd.
Speaking to Sky Sports Scotland (27 November), Boyd wrote off the Gers’ chances of overhauling the 11-point lead at the top, and should instead focus on beating Aberdeen to second place.
Philippe Clement’s side could only record a 1-1 draw with Dundee United last time out, with Aberdeen remaining nine points ahead of them and Boyd demanding an improvement in performances.
He said: “I think you can write off Rangers mounting a title challenge this season – it’s been really, really poor so far.
“Overall, a draw was a fair result against Dundee United, but that’s where Rangers are at at this moment in time.
“For anybody still speaking about a title challenge in Scotland, there is absolutely no chance. Rangers have got a fight on their hands with Aberdeen to finish second.
“(Rangers) need to just worry about theirselves. The performances need to get better, and start picking up points on a regular basis.”
Rangers nowhere near ready to mount Premiership title charge
Sitting 11 points behind Celtic and nine behind Aberdeen just 12 matches into the season would have been unthinkable for even the most pessimistic of Gers fans back at the beginning of August.
However, that’s exactly where Clement’s side are after their hit-and-miss start to the campaign, with their draw against Dundee United the latest in a series of disappointments.
While the odd slip-up can happen at any point in the season, the fact that the Bears have already been beaten convincingly by both Aberdeen and Celtic shows how far off the pace they truly are.
Further setbacks, particularly on the domestic front, will only see the mounting pressure on Clement grow to unbearable levels, but it remains to be seen just how he can turn things around.
Bridging an 11-point gap with 26 matches of the season remaining is far from impossible, but given the current trajectory the Belgian and his team are heading on, Boyd’s title write-off is hardly surprising.
