Keith Jackson believes Philippe Clement has “absolutely no idea” about who should be leading the attacking line for Rangers.
The number nine role within the Gers’ squad has been a problem position since the start of the season, with Cyriel Dessers’ lack of composure causing a bit of a stir among the Gers’ fanbase.
Writing for the Daily Record via their website (2 November), Jackson shared his thoughts on the job Clement has done at Rangers this season.
“While [Brendan] Rodgers has it all methodically and meticulously worked out at Celtic, Clement is throwing muck at the wall in the hope of seeing what sticks,” he said.
“He doesn’t know if he can trust his captain enough to play him. Can’t work out who should partner John Souttar at the back. Chops and changes the shape and balance of his midfield three like he’s pinning a tail on a donkey.
“And has absolutely no idea who should be leading his attack as a reliable, fully functioning centre forward.
“Amidst this muddled uncertainty, the likes of Nico Raskin and Ianis Hagi have emerged from nowhere to walk into his first team – even though both of these players looked to be on the way out just a few months ago.
“And yet the feeling remains that Clement is now in nothing more than a holding pattern ahead of that showdown with Rodgers in less than a fortnight’s time.”
Philippe Clement needs to figure out his strongest Rangers XI
While the Gers’ form in both the Scottish League Cup and Europa League has been impressive, their performance in the league has left an awful lot to be desired.
The Gers currently sit third in the table and are 11 points adrift of league leaders Celtic, while they are even seven points away from second-placed Aberdeen.
While the Belgian has kept his role for the moment, that’s likely down to the lack of cohesion the club has within their backroom staff.
Indeed, they’ve just hired Patrick Stewart as their new CEO, but the fact he won’t fully start in his role at Ibrox until the 16 December is a cause for concern.
A positive, however, is that if Rangers are beaten by Celtic in the final – something nobody wants to think about – there will actually be some people who can make decisions about the best way to take the club forward.
Only time will tell what the future holds for both Rangers and Clement as the season edges to its midway point.
In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton reacted to a question that Kris Boyd asked him at half-time of the Gers’ clash against St Johnstone on Sunday.
