'Act of Lunacy' - Peter Martin left aghast at Rangers transfer rumour he heard mooted

Peter Martin believes that Rangers letting James Tavernier go before January would be an “act of lunacy”.

It has been reported that clubs in both Turkey and Qatar remain interested in signing the Gers skipper [Graeme Bailey, 6 September] and the club are prepared to cash in on the 32-year-old

However, speaking on PLZ Soccer (7 September), Martin shared that he can’t see the Gers allowing the Englishman to leave any time soon.

“There was a suggestion that they might punt him [Tavernier] out to Turkey or Saudi Arabia because their windows are still open,” Martin said.

“I can’t see that happening, I think that would be an act of lunacy, I mean I heard it mooted today.”

Rangers need to keep James Tavernier until at least January

The summer transfer window was full of rumours surrounding the future of Rangers ace Tavernier.

Moves to the Saudi Pro League and the Turkish Super Lig [HITC, 6 September] are just two that spring to mind in terms of links reported over the summer transfer window.

While the right-back is likely on substantial wages at Rangers, it would be silly of the club to allow their first-choice right-back and skipper to exit the club without being able to source a replacement until January.

In reality, an Ibrox exit seems to be on the cards for Tavernier but until they manage to find someone to replace him, the Glasgow-based outfit can’t risk being a man down in an already light area within their squad.

Indeed, Tavernier has seen better days in a Gers kit but, at this moment in time, they need all the experience that they can get to try and get them through the campaign.

Stalwarts such as John Lundtsram and Borna Barisic have already exited this summer and it’s clear that Philippe Clement wants to build a younger team, but, unless they wait until January when a replacement can be bought, they can’t sell Tavernier.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement has been backed to win fan’s support back this season.
