Ally McCoist doesn’t believe the next Old Firm derby will be “defining” for the future of Philippe Clement at Rangers.
The Gers recently lost the Scottish League Cup final 5-4 on penalties after an end-to-end game that ended 3-3 when the full-time whistle was blown.
Chris Sutton, on the other hand, stated that he thinks that a seventh winless game against Celtic could mark the end of the road for the Belgian.
Speaking to the Daily Record (20 December, page 48), McCoist shared why he thinks the 50-year-old will keep his role even if they’re beaten by Brendan Rodgers’ men again.
“I’m not sure if I’d go as far as to say the next Old Firm game will be defining for Clement,” he said.
“Where I do agree with big Chris – for the first time in about 11 years – is he has to keep beating Celtic. But that’s a fact, regardless of who is the Rangers manager.
“If you are a Rangers manager, you have to beat Celtic. If you are the centre-forward at Rangers, you have to score goals against Celtic.”
Philippe Clement needs to get Rangers to beat Celtic
The Scottish League Cup final may have ended in a defeat for Rangers but realistically, the game could have gone either way.
In fact, if the Gers were awarded the penalty that they deserved after Vaclav Cerny was dragged down by Liam Scales on the edge of the 18-yard box, they could have even left Hampden Park on Sunday as victors.
Things haven’t been smooth sailing for Clement at Ibrox this year and while his team have picked up their form in recent weeks, it still feels like more can come from the squad, especially because they currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership.
If the Gers can keep up their recent run of form and Hamza Igamane can continue firing, it feels like they’d be going into their next Old Firm derby on 2 January in good spirits and perhaps looking for vengeance, which, in all honesty, could be exactly what they need.
In other Rangers news, a problem in St Etienne’s pursuit of Cyriel Dessers has emerged.
