Andy Goldstein says Everton would have acted the same way as Leicester City had they been in the same scenario regarding PSR.
Leicester have managed to win their appeal against punishment for breaching PSR stipulations, due to a loophole citing the club had already been relegated from the Premier League when the 2022-23 accounting period ended and finances had to be declared.
This has consequently left the Premier League powerless to punish the Foxes – who have since returned to the top flight – much to the anger of supporters of Everton, who were twice punished last season for rule breaches and docked a combined eight points.
Goldstein, speaking with Darren Bent live on talkSPORT [4 September, 16:12] said: “Leicester are not to blame. Their lawyers have found and exploited a loophole.
“If Everton, Leeds United and Nottingham Forest had found the same loophole, they would have done the same thing, believe me.
“It’s the Premier League who need to be held accountable; they need to make it a lot easier for themselves to go after clubs.”
Everton fans’ wrath at Leicester appeal success
Everton supporters have had their run-ins on multiple occasions with the Premier League.
Sometimes, the league have been to blame; others they have not and certain situations have been more complicated than to simply point the finger at a sole party.
But in this instance, their anger is fully justified – it is a complete double standard borne out of almost an administrational oversight by the league governing body, and Leicester have taken full advantage.
There will now inevitably be a revision of the rules which blur the lines between when a Premier League club hands over its shares in EFL clubs on their way down to the Championship, and when they are a fully-fledged Championship club not liable for punishment by the Premier League any longer.
Relegation is of course a harsher punishment than a points deduction – but fans on Merseyside will argue that is incomparable due to footballing reasons sealing Leicester’s fate back in May 2023.
Had Everton been relegated on the final day of the 2022-23 season alongside the Foxes, it would hypothetically have been interesting to see what the Toffees’ lawyers would have done in comparison to how they’ve successfully played it at the King Power.
Over to you, Premier League.
