Tottenham will not sign Timo Werner permanently from RB Leipzig at the end of the season as Ange Postecoglou seeks an upgrade, according to Give Me Sport.
It is reported on 28 October that Werner is set to return to his parent club upon the expiry of his loan deal in North London, with Postecoglou looking at other options.
The Australian is more than happy for Werner to continue with the Lilywhites until the end of the season, but should another club express interest in January, the German forward could be on the move.
However, with Werner likely to remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until May, Spurs are now set to prepare a summer bid for a more versatile alternative who can add further firepower from out wide.
Timo Werner’s time at Tottenham coming to an end
As was often the case during his time at London rivals Chelsea, Werner’s attitude and commitment to the cause in the Lilywhite shirt cannot be questioned – however, his final output very much can.
The 28-year-old, who has played almost exclusively as a left winger since his arrival last January, is yet to find the net in 11 appearances this season and scored just two in 14 in the last campaign.
Even as a regular member of Postecoglou’s front-footed, all-out attacking setup at Spurs, Werner’s end product and profligate finishing have left a lot to be desired, regardless of the level of opponent they face.
With the likes of James Maddison and even youngster Mikey Moore making the most of their opportunities in the attacking third than Werner, it’s no surprise to see his role changing of late.
A return to Leipzig – where he has excelled either side of his spells in England – now looks inevitable at the end of the season, leaving the onus on Werner to go out with a bang in North London.
In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou was wrong to substitute one Spurs player after what he did in the defeat to Crystal Palace.
