Connor Goldson may be discussing a potential move from Rangers to Aris Limassol, according to This is Mappa.
The Cypriot football podcast, which has been featured on the likes of Rangers Review previously, indicated via X on 21 that rumours suggesting the Ibrox defender has flown out to the Island on a private jet ahead of a move may have some substance to them.
Aris are reportedly looking to sign an experienced centre-back this summer and can afford the Englishman’s wages.
Goldson is reported to already be a target for Birmingham City [Scottish Sun, 30 June] and also has interest from Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq [Daily Record, 24 April].
This Is Mappa wrote: “We know Aris have been looking to sign an experienced CB this summer & they certainly have the financial muscle to afford Goldson’s salary.”
Then in a follow-up comment suggesting it was just rumours they added: “We’ve done some digging. Could be more than just a rumour.”
Connor Goldson to follow James Tavernier out of Rangers?
James Tavernier already appears to be on the brink of leaving Ibrox as a deal with Trabzonspor is thought to be wanted by all involved [The 4th Official, 20 July] despite the prospect of a rival bid from Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Besiktas [Takvim, 20 July].
If there could be something in the suggestion that the vice-captain is going to leave as well at a time when Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen appear to need to clear out senior players in order to continue to bring in their own signings it might mean the window is about to get moving again.
Goldson and Tavernier have both been key men for the Light Blues in recent seasons on the pitch and in the dressing room.
But while that has seen them be part of the 55th Scottish Premiership title and a pair of cup wins they have also become the faces of a period of relative underachievement for the club.
That may ultimately be unfair but on a purely footballing level Goldson’s form dipped noticeably last season and after Clement made clear only Jack Butland is irreplaceable [Rangers Review, 14 July] now might be the right time for the centre-back to move on.
The Gers have brought in a new youngster at the back in Clinton Nsiala but the 20-year-old has yet to play a senior game in his career so is unlikely to make an immediate impact.
John Souttar made noticeable improvements last term but neither he nor Ben Davies have fully established themselves at centre-back to the point where 36-year-old Leon Balogun may be the top option at this point.
Rangers have been told to sign Scott McKenna if they have the opportunity after his exit from Nottingham Forest.
It appears the club need to make space in the squad to bring someone like the Scot in and if Goldson is indeed in Cyprus for the purpose of discussing a move to Aris Limassol just as Tavernier looks set to leave a pair of gaps could be about to open up.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement has already made changes after a disturbing Ibrox issue left one pundit “shocked”.
