Arne Slot 'not happy with Darwin Nunez' - Sky pundit analyses Liverpool footage

Arne Slot was not happy with Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez after two unbelievable misses against Newcastle, said Clinton Morrison.

The 25-year-old squandered the chance to score twice for the Reds, including a header from five yards out and a tap-in from the same distance as two points were dropped in the 3-3 draw at St. James’ Park on 4 December.

Morrison couldn’t believe what he was seeing from the Uruguayan star and judging by his manager’s reaction, nor could the Dutchman.

The pundit shouted over Mike Dean on Sky Sports Soccer Special (8.43pm) – “Oh where are you going?! Oh my gosh!”

When asked why he was shouting he said: “Because wait till you see the miss from Darwin Nunez. I cannot believe he’s missed it at the back post. Oh my gosh. [Nick] Pope is in no man’s land. Nunez is coming in at the back post and it looks like from this angle he can’t get there.

“But I think you get there as a centre-forward. If you’re going to go into the post, be brave. I don’t know how he doesn’t get that. And [Cody] Gakpo could score. I think it’s a bad header from Gakpo but you’re thinking Nunez surely puts it in at the back post.”

Then again at 9.09pm Morrison exclaimed: “Oh my gosh! I can’t believe Nunez has missed this again. It’s a great opportunity. They play brilliant football, it falls to Diaz on the right-hand side. He cuts inside, and Nunez is there.

“He’s four yards out and he just drags the shot horribly wide. It should be hitting the target from there. I know there’s bodies in front of him but he’s just dragged it completely wide. Four yards out? He’s got to be hitting the target.

“Arne Slot, the camera’s on him, he’s not happy.”

Liverpool should sell Darwin Nunez

Football Insider opinion

The Uruguayan forward has, scored just three goals across 18 appearances this season. As a striker that was bought for £85 million [Sky Sports] these stats are unacceptable.

In his first season, Núñez failed to reach double figures and his highest tally so far is just 11.

Many predicted he would develop and mature into a great striker, but at 25 years old, he remains largely the same player, struggling with consistency and missed opportunities.

League leaders Liverpool were pegged back by Fabian Schar’s late equaliser as Newcastle held the Premier League leaders to a thrilling draw Slot unhappy as it opened the door for both Chelsea and Arsenal to close the gap, which they each did against Southampton and Man United respectively.

Núñez’s missed two key chances that could have secured victory for the Reds. For Liverpool to succeed at the highest level, they need an elite striker who can punish opponents in crucial moments.

They cannot rely solely on Mo Salah to deliver consistently. Others must step up, and Núñez has to become more clinical in front of goal.
