Arsenal and Liverpool’s hopes of signing Anthony Gordon have taken a boost, as talks over a contract extension with Newcastle United are ‘progressing slowly’.

Gordon enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with the Magpies last season, recording 11 goals and 10 assists in 35 Premier League appearances.

This form saw him linked with a move away from St. James’ Park with a £75million transfer to Liverpool very nearly happening.

That deal, which would have seen Joe Gomez move the other way for £45m, collapsed at the eleventh hour and once Newcastle were no longer in danger of breaching profit and sustainability rules, they informed Gordon he would not be sold at all.

Liverpool remain interested in the forward however, especially with the future of talisman Mohamed Salah still up in the air.

Arsenal are also keen, with sporting director Edu Gaspar a ‘big admirer’, and plan to make a move for the 23-year-old next summer.

Those plans could be scuppered however if Gordon signs a new contract with Newcastle, but The Telegraph report that while the club promised him a ‘lucrative long-term deal’ over the summer, ‘progress has been slow’.

It is said that the player feels ‘undervalued’ by what the Magpies have offered so far as they try to adhere to their strict wage structure and if fresh terms cannot be agreed then a sale maybe considered as Gordon’s current contract expires in 2026.

However, in a blow to the Reds and the Gunners, it does not appear that Gordon is pushing for an exit and he and Newcastle are hopeful a deal can be agreed.

That said, the forward was disappointed the Liverpool transfer fell through and was distracted by this during Euro 2024, one of the reasons why then-England boss Gareth Southgate become reluctant to give him minutes at the tournament.

Southgate’s successor Lee Carsley is more keen on Gordon starting him in his first two games in charge, though his performances for his club so far this season have noticeable dipped.

With one goal and no assists in the opening six games, there have been calls for Eddie Howe to drop the Three Lions star for the in-form Harvey Barnes when Newcastle host Manchester City on Saturday.
