Arsenal’s plans to make Emirates bigger than Manchester United’s Old Trafford
They're lagging behind.
Arsenal are exploring plans to expand the Emirates into an 80,000-seater stadium so that the Gunners have the biggest club arena in Britain.
The club moved into their Emirates home in 2006 and the stadium was the envy of the Premier League at the time.
With a 60,000 capacity, the Emirates was the second largest club stadium behind Manchester United’s Old Trafford for a decade.
However, others have been catching up in recent years, with Tottenham, West Ham and Liverpool all overtaking the Emirates in terms of capacity.
Manchester United are exploring the possibility of building a new 100,000-seater stadium, while Chelsea and Manchester City have plans to expand.
And Bloomberg say Arsenal are fearful they could lag further behind their rivals and have sought advice from stadium planners to look at plans to expand the Emirates into a 80,000-seater.
That would significantly boost the club’s revenues, though building costs would be high.
It is unclear how the plans would look, and whether the Gunners would be able to remain at the Emirates as work is undertaken.
However, it’s possible that work could be undertaken one stand at a time, meaning less disruption.
