Barcelona midfielder turns down offer from La Liga side

Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto is technically a free agent after his contract expired on Monday, but there has been no announcement of his exit. The Blaugrana have asked him to wait to see how their finances are before they will sign him to a new contract that they had agreed terms on.

The 32-year-old midfielder is concerned that his time at the club is coming to an end, despite Barcelona telling him to wait. Sport say that Barcelona have communicated to Roberto that they plan to register Roberto once their finances are in better order, which they hope to be the case soon. On the 10th of July, Barcelona will return to training though, and he will not be able to do so if he is not signed back to the club.

If he is to leave though, he would try to stay in Europe, and is particularly attracted by the chance to play in the Premier League. He has always been clear that he would like to finish his career in Major League Soccer too. Where Relevo differ from their Catalan counterparts is that they report Barcelona would not be against an exit for Roberto if it transpires.

Their offer to Roberto expires on the 10th of August, but first Gavi, Inigo Martinez, Alejandro Balde and new coach Hansi Flick will be registered, while Vitor Roque is another uncertain case. While Roberto has had interest from various places, only Sevilla have made a serious approach, which the veteran has turned down thus far.

Roberto is unlikely to be a game-changer for Barcelona one way or another next season, but did make some useful contributions last year as a rotational option. His leadership and experience could also be useful to Flick, given he speaks English, and is unlikely to be a difficult character to manage for the new coach.
