Cyriel Dessers proved once again why he makes Rangers fans mad against Olympiacos on Thursday, Liam McLeod has said.
It was the Nigerian international who rescued a point for the Bears in the 1-1 draw on 7 November, but it could have been so much more.
In the opening 45 minutes, Dessers missed two clear-cut chances leaving the travelling fans with their head in their hands in Athens.
Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland (7 November, 18:03) McLeod said: “Cyriel Dessers, that is what drives the Rangers fans mad.”
Steven Thompson replied: “It is, when you get these opportunities on big European nights, you’ve got to take them.
“It’s a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and the angle is not too bad but he’s trying to curl it around the goalkeeper but there was a lack of conviction about what he was doing, his shot was so tame”.
Philippe Clement to drop Cyriel Dessers at Rangers?
Nils Koppen failed to bring in that big-name striker that many people wanted over the summer.
Of course, Hamza Igamane was brought in but in the few appearances he’s made so far, he looks to be more of a project and not yet up to the standard required.
Philippe Clement hasn’t had many options within his ranks but with Danilo now getting back to full fitness, it’s hard to see how the Nigeria international will keep his starting spot, despite his equalising goal against Olympiacos.
The striker did make up for his earlier misses with his strike that brought the Gers level but the fact it took him three attempts to get one shot in the back of the net, says all fans need to know.
If Clement wants to keep his role as Rangers boss, one of the things he could try is benching the striker and seeing if Danilo can carry the weight.
Of course, it’s always a risk axing your top scorer but with his poor conversion rate, it feels like something that has to happen.
