Bent names Everton ace who is now ready to captain his country

Darren Bent believes Jordan Pickford can be a future England captain after his stellar contributions to Everton and the national side.

Former Blues teammate John Stones is expected to captain the side at Wembley in the UEFA Nations League against Greece on Thursday [10 October], with usual skipper Harry Kane expected to be named on the bench.

Bent discussed who could captain the side live on talkSPORT [10 October, 5:11pm], with the former Three Lion player responding when co-host Andy Goldstein touted Pickford as a candidate.

He said: “Why not? He’s been there and done it with England.”

Jordan Pickford can lead Everton and England

The Blues’ number one has had the odd off-day this season but his contributions at both club and national level cannot be underestimated.

Pickford is like Marmite – you either love him or you hate him – and the goalkeeper has been no stranger to criticism this year as his side look set for another relegation battle following recent performances.

The poor form from Sean Dyche’s side prior to the past fortnight can hardly all be attributed to Pickford. The defence lining up in front of his goal has been culpable for multiple errors resulting in goals and costing the side.

His crucial penalty save against former teammate Anthony Gordon in the 0-0 draw against Newcastle United at Goodison Park last weekend outlines his importance to the Toffees and how he can step up for his side when needed most.

Everton ace Jordan Pickford is a regular for England

Pickford helped England to two consecutive European Championship finals under Gareth Southgate and is indisputably the best goalkeeper the country has to offer. His claim is therefore as good as any in the current side to wear the captain’s armband in Kane’s absence.

He is arguably one of the most important players for Everton and England. The 30-year-old should be shoo-in to one day represent the armband for both club and country.

In other Everton news, Dan Friedkin is set to spark the transfer market and contract activity at the Toffees as the takeover nears.
