Darren Bent named Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite in a scathing verdict of Tottenham and their transfer activity.

The Blues adopted a bullish approach in Manchester United’s pursuit of the centre-back during the summer, sticking with their £80million valuation – still, the interest persists with Chelsea now entering the frame for his signature.

However, Bent name-dropped the 22-year-old when discussing Tottenham’s transfer plans live on talkSPORT [12 December, 5:11pm], and suggested he should be on the radar of the North London outfit.

Discussing the lack of big-name signings made by Spurs, Bent said: “Take Branthwaite at Everton. Everyone thinks he’s going to be a top player. If he becomes available…”

The Friedkin Group must convince Jarrad Branthwaite to remain at Everton

Despite starting only five league matches for Everton this term, Branthwaite remains one of the most sought-after commodities in the Premier League.

His impact for the Blues is clear as day – since his return from a long-term groin injury, he has helped his teammates keep three clean sheets in the Premier League, barring the 4-0 loss against Manchester United.

Branthwaite was one of the few standout performers during another relegation-threatened campaign last term, and he has returned to the first-team fold without skipping a beat.

However, The Friedkin Group is on track to complete the proposed takeover in December [Alan Myers], and one of the first challenges awaiting the soon-to-be owners will be convincing Branthwaite that his long-term future remains on Merseyside.

It would be difficult for the Blues to turn down a big-money offer for the defender that matches their valuation, but if Dan Friedkin is serious about awaking the sleeping giant that is Everton, retaining their best player is a requirement.

Tottenham could neither afford Branthwaite nor are an attractive enough proposition to pry Branthwaite away from Goodison Park – Manchester United and Chelsea, on the other hand, is a different story.

Unfortunately for the Blues, this saga is expected to drag on throughout the season and into the summer transfer window.
