Billy Dodds was in disbelief as Celtic destroyed Rangers in the Old Firm Derby on Sunday [1 August].
Rangers fell to a 3-0 defeat at Celtic Park in the first Old Firm clash of the season, courtesy of goals from Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor.
Dodds analysed the individual mistakes that cost Rangers the match for BBC Sportscene [1 August, 18m 25s] and slammed Phillipe Clement for his side’s approach when falling behind.
He said: “As soon as Celtic scored their opening goal, [Rangers] were done. I couldn’t believe their mentality. You’ve got to have a better mentality when Celtic come at you, and Rangers didn’t.”
Rangers mentality cost them in Old Firm clash
Once the first Celtic goal found the back of the net, there was an overwhelming sense that the tie had already been decided and that is the underlying problem facing Rangers this season.
After a chaotic summer transfer window with 10 new signings walking through the door at the Light Blues, and 10 departing the club, the gulf in class between themselves and their biggest rivals is as apparent as ever.
The result at Celtic Park is a damning reminder the resurrection job facing Clement at the Gers will not be an overnight fix, and it’s going to take at least a few years of smart recruitment to build a side capable of challenging Celtic for the title.
When captain James Tavernier sets the example, switching off and allowing Alistair Johnston to make an underlapping run to assist Maeda for the opener, it highlights a fundamental issue in the current side.
Brendan Rodgers could smell blood and his side comfortably set about the task at hand. They were better than Clement’s side in every department and the willingness of the Celtic player to fight for the badge was leaps and bounds above any Rangers player.
The Light Blues’ SPFL chances are somewhat over already. With a five-point gap between themselves and Celtic, they will need to win in the reverse fixture in January and hope for a slip-up to stand any chance of gaining ground in the race for the title.
