Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton butted heads ahead of Rangers’ 1-0 win over St Johnstone while discussing which striker should start on Sunday.
Following his stellar performance against Nice in the Europa League, Hamza Igamane was given the nod by Philippe Clement, with both Cyriel Dessers and Danilo starting on the bench.
Despite the number of attacking talents on the pitch, it took a Jason Holt own goal to secure all three points at McDiarmid Park on 1 December, with James Tavernier the one pressing him into the error.
While discussing the striker selection live on Sky Sports [1 December, 11:45am], Boyd said: “Can I speak? You’ve cut me off three times. Last week, Dessers started for 45 minutes,
“Danilo came on but because he can’t play during the week, Imagane comes in. He’s done well so he starts. All three have attributes and if you put them together, you might get a proper No.9 for Rangers.”
Sutton, clearly winding Boyd up, replied: “You’ve still not answered… I’d start Dessers.”
Which striker should Philippe Clement make his first choice at Rangers?
Dessers has been the first-choice No.9 since arriving from Udinese in the summer of 2023, but mainly because Danilo has been unavailable through injury for some time.
Now, Clement has three different striker options at his disposal adding to a star-studded forward line, all of whom hit their highest gears during the 4-1 win over Nice in the Europa League on Thursday 28 November.
Igamane notched a brace in France, rightfully keeping his spot in the starting XI for the trip to McDiarmid Park, but he was unable to have the same effect against the Saints in the Scottish Premiership.
Dessers, on the other hand, would have likely hit the back of the net at least once with all the chances being made in the Saints’ penalty area, but he failed to even get onto the pitch.
Instead, Danilo played 30 minutes, having a couple of opportunities to seal the win, but ultimately could not find the telling touch. It is a good problem for the Gers to have, only if one of them is firing on all cylinders.
