Dominic Calvert-Lewin has prevented Everton from being relegated twice as a key man at Goodison, according to Tony Bellew.
The former pro-boxer reacted via X on 6 October to laud the Toffees striker in the wake of the goalless draw with Newcastle a day earlier, where the 27-year-old was denied a penalty in a controversial incident.
Calvert-Lewin’s future is up in the air as it emerged via i News on 4 October he has turned down renewed attempts from the club to open new contract talks as his current deal ends in the summer.
But Bellew insists he’s vital, saying: “Can’t explain how important this lad has been to our club! We’d of been relegated twice if it wasn’t for him [in my opinion]!!”

It is certainly true that Calvert-Lewin remains the top striker at Goodison Park despite others coming and going over the past few seasons.
Since Richarlison was sold to Tottenham three summers ago he has been the undisputed main man up front, even through the period when he was suffering through repeated injury problems.
He has been far from perfect but when on form Sean Dyche’s side are a completely different prospect so Bellew’s view isn’t outrageous.
But unless the Dan Friedkin takeover suddenly changes his mind the club look like they are going to need to get ready to be without him.
If was uncertainty over the ownership situation that was said to be behind Calvert-Lewin’s reluctance to extend his stay on Merseyside [Paul Joyce, 19 July].
So the Americans completing their buyout of Farhad Moshiri in the coming weeks might tip the balance.
But after the club’s latest attempt to reopen negotiations was knocked back last month he will be able to discuss a pre-contract overseas from January after interest from AC Milan in the summer, as well as the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United [i News, 4 October], so time is running out .
