Cesc Fabregas now signs 'sensational' player just months after Tottenham released him - Fabrizio Romano
????
Como and Cesc Fabregas have made some ambitious signings this summer – such as Raphael Varane – and the Italian side have now picked up a player Tottenham released.
The Serie A side also signed Sergi Roberto, Alberto Moreno, Pepe Reina, Andrea Belotti and others after their promotion from Serie B – and they have now added another big name.
So, who has Cesc Fabregas lured to Como just months after his release from Tottenham? Let’s take a look…
Cesc Fabregas signs Ivan Perisic for Como after Spurs release
Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Como are in advanced talks to sign Ivan Perisic – with a total agreement close
The reliable Italian journalist adds that the Croatia international also had an offer from Genoa.
It comes after Tottenham released Perisic – who Andros Townsend called a “sensational” footballer while on commentary duty at UEFA Euro 2024 – when his contract expired back in June 2024.
The Croatian then returned to boyhood club Hajduk Split for a monthly salary of just €1 (84p) – although that romantic move turned sour after Gennaro Gattuso told Perisic he was surplus to requirements.
Sadly, the 35-year-old seemed genuinely upset by this development, as he recently told Croatian news outlet Dalmatinski: “I came to Hajduk in the hope that together we will realise our dream and take the title. I had a good contract at Tottenham, and even when I was injured (during his loan at Hajduk Split) I had an excellent offer from a big foreign club.
“Instead, at the invitation of the club management and the fans, I chose a life without a family, living abroad in the hope that I can help fight for the title and place in the group stage of the Champions League.
“It is clear to everyone that I didn’t choose Hajduk and Split because of money. In my desire to help, I put my health and my family on the back burner many times and I don’t regret it because I don’t know any other way, but on Sunday evening someone else stepped forward (Gattuso) and decided that he no longer needed my help.
“Ever since I can remember, I have looked at Hajduk as something big, and I will behave that way in a moment that is extremely difficult for me and my family. I wish the club all the luck, victory on Thursday, placement in Europe and winning the title, regardless of who is managing the club.”
Pleasing to see after Tottenham exit
It was a shame to see Gattuso spoil Perisic’s sentimental return to Split, but in Como, the Croatian has found a beautiful new home, arriving as a senior figure in an exciting project under Fabregas.
As you can tell by his comments, the situation at Hajduk Split was clearly a difficult one for the man born in Split, although every Tottenham fan is surely pleased to hear that he has now found a new club.
