Philippe Clement has to tinker with his preferred system because the Rangers squad he currently has available is not good enough for it, according to Derek Ferguson.
The Light Blues head to Tynecastle to face Hearts in the season opener on 3 August and the Ibrox boss has only been able to complete part of his transfer business this summer.
Only two senior outfield options have arrived with the recent captures of Wolfsburg winger Vaclav Cerny and FC Twente centre-back Robin Propper.
And Ferguson believes there are probably four more additions required after the Dutch defender for Clement to be able to operate his 4-2-3-1 formation so he will need to change it until he can get them in.
He exclusively told Ibrox News: “Like a number of positions, we need a centre-mid, we need a wide player, we need a striker, and arguably we need a number 10 as well.
“And the but is with that the manager, he wants to play a 4-2-3-1. I think with the quality of the players he’s got at his disposal he needs to tinker a little bit.
“I think he needs to change it to be honest with you”.
Robin Propper replaces Connor Goldson at Rangers
Propper has been rushed in via a deal which only took two days, much to the displeasure of Twente, and if available will likely be needed to slot straight in after Connor Goldson’s sale to Aris Limassol.
Cerny confirmed ahead of the game he isn’t ready to start but can contribute [Rangers Review, 2 August], although he is currently the man to fill the boots of Abdallah Sima so will have to hit the ground running.
Todd Cantwell’s transfer request means the best number 10 in the squad has probably played his last Rangers game, even if he has never been at his best under Clement, while Joan Jordan was seemingly the man to come into the midfield but the pursuit of the Sevilla man fell through in bizarre circumstances [ABC, 29 July].
For the long-awaited striker signing all eyes will be on the key man on the opposition’s team-sheet at Tynecastle in Lawrence Shankland, with a transfer for the Scotland ace reportedly back on the table at Ibrox [Daily Record, 29 July].
In other Rangers news, a Shankland goal against the Light Blues will make an Ibrox switch a “foregone conclusion”.
