Rangers plan on having a new chairman in place before their Annual General Meeting is held on 5 December, according to Chris Jack.
Speaking on the Rangers Review (13 November), Jack said that the club’s current priority is to appoint a new chairman before they fill the vacancy left by James Bisgrove as chief executive officer.
John Gilligan has been in place as interim chairman since John Bennett’s resignation in September, but the club remain without both CEO and chief of football operations with the AGM approaching.
Jack said: “If we’re going through it chronologically it will be chairman before chief executive.
“The accounts were out a couple of weeks to go, the AGM – we’re counting down days to that – I believe there will be a chairman in before that, I think that’s certainly the ambition to have a chairman appointed before the AGM.
“CEO then comes after that, and it’s only once you have the chairman in, the CEO in, you can then start saying ‘can we look at sporting director or a director of football’ – another football figure within the club.”
Rangers finally starting to reverse boardroom decline at Ibrox
Upon Gilligan’s appointment as Bennett’s interim replacement to steer the ship at Ibrox, the club’s priority appeared to be hiring a CEO to finally fill the void left by Bisgrove after his exit back in May [Chris Jack, 17 September].
However, progress on that front has slowed – or at least not sped up – in the weeks since, with further vacancies popping up following Creag Robertson’s departure as director of football operations.
Gilligan being replaced permanently in the top job, though, is undoubtedly the club’s overriding issue, with a new chairman more likely to steer the Light Blues in a new direction than any other individual.
A new direction is exactly what’s needed at Ibrox, following a start to the season which has left Philippe Clement’s side nine points off the pace in the Premiership and coming under increasing pressure.
Clement’s job security has been all-but assured given there are few figures of real authority above him, but if a new chairman is in place before 5 December, that could all be about to change.
In other Rangers news, Ross McCormack has told supporters to realise the club’s low standing in the current transfer market.
