Philippe Clement received a round of applause at the Rangers AGM after he reassured supporters he has the highest standards set for his side, according to the Daily Record.
The Belgian’s reign at Ibrox has not gone smoothly and with the Gers currently sitting third in the league, 11 points away from the top spot, there have been plenty of questions asked about the manager’s future.
However, the Scottish Premiership side have also shown their ability to get results and a 6-0 thrashing of Kilmarnock on Wednesday [4 December] only proved that there is the ability in the side.
Despite criticism over the manager, Clement was well-received at the AGM and received a round of applause for his answer when asked if the fans can expect glory or whether to reign in their expectations as the boss replied by saying [quoted via the Daily Record]: “The legacy of Rangers is winning. The day we lower that bar, Rangers is not Rangers anymore. That’s my message for the dressing room. That’s what the new guys need to learn.
“That’s what the older guys are in the dressing room for. They need to keep this culture in the club. So it’s true in football that a lot of things are decided by money.
“The more money you have, the more quality you can buy, the more quality you can get. But it’s also about hard work. It’s not only about money.
“We’re working with everybody really hard in the building to get these young talents and also the older players to gel together, to do the right things together, to create a better team.”
A change of fortune for Philippe Clement at Rangers?
Given how poor things have been at Ibrox this season and the level of disappointment from the fans, as well as the constant pressure on the manager, it was surprising to see the boss get a good reception from the supporters at the AGM.
In his response to the question put to him, the Belgian proved he does understand Rangers which perhaps has been something many have questioned of late following events such as his comments about arch-rivals Celtic.
His response makes it clear that he has the desire to improve things at the club with a desire to bring success back to Ibrox and the state of the club off the pitch can’t have been too helpful as he has attempted to build something at the club.
That being said, while his words resonated with supporters, football is a cut-throat industry and the 50-year-old has to deliver on the pitch, ensuring his side performs consistently if he wants to save his job and be the man to take the Gers forward.
