Copenhagen sporting director Sune Smith-Nielsen has issued an admission on Rangers and Celtic target Scott McKenna, as his contract at Nottingham Forest has expired.

As quoted by Football Scotland on 29 June, Smith-Nielsen refused to confirm whether or not the club would be making a move for the 27-year-old, who spent last season on loan at the Danish side.

He will not be signing a new deal at the City Ground and becomes a free agent come 1 July.

Smith-Nielsen said: “His contract has expired. And our loan here expires on June 30. Right now we have to deal with that. But I don’t want to comment on specific names.”

Rangers must sign Scott McKenna on a free transfer

Alex McLeish lauded the Scotland international back in 2018 for his performances for the national team.

He told the BBC: “Scott McKenna was amazing tonight. He had a really strong game. He has had two excellent games and was even better tonight.”

Gers must look to secure his services as the 27-year-old brings a wealth of experience from the Premier League and international football.

McKenna is a left-footed centre-back, a position Gers need to strengthen and his familiarity with Scottish football from his Aberdeen days is an added advantage.

As a free agent, he represents a cost-effective option in a market where quality defenders are expensive.

McKenna’s physical presence and defensive skills could provide the stability and depth needed in the backline.

Rangers Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement is on the hunt for new players at Rangers this summer.

His signing would also help the club meet the homegrown quota, a crucial aspect for domestic and European competitions.

In other Rangers news, the club have received offers from a number of English clubs for an in-demand player who’s made his decision about his future at Ibrox.
