Everton completing a loan move for England midfielder Kalvin Phillips will free up Manchester City to bring in a replacement, according to GiveMeSport.

The website reported on 8 August that with City still planning on sending Phillips to pastures new this summer, the Toffees are one of the clubs exploring a temporary deal for the 28-year-old midfielder.

City are reportedly keen on offloading Phillips on a permanent deal after his lack of minutes last season – including while on loan at West Ham – but Sean Dyche’s side are more likely to pursue a loan move.

The Blues have been on the hunt for a defensive midfielder since Amadou Onana’s £50million switch to Aston Villa, and GiveMeSport’s report adds that signing Phillips would be seen as a statement of intent.

Sean Dyche could revive Kalvin Phillips’ career with Everton loan

While Phillips’ distinct lack of game-time in the last two seasons make signing him permanently a risk for any and every Premier League club, a loan move to Goodison Park may prove ideal for both parties.

Phillips’ defensive screening and long-range passing ability from deep could be truly unlocked as part of a Toffees side expected to see far much less of the ball than Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips
Everton target Kalvin Phillips has been a serial bench-warmer during his time at Manchester City.

Providing an outlet on the transition – particularly with ex-Leeds team-mate Jack Harrison to aim for out wide – is something Phillips excels at, and also hasn’t been required to do much of at the Etihad Stadium.

Within a Toffees side hoping for a much smoother campaign than last season, and in the bear-pit that Goodison could become in its last season, Phillips could prove to be the perfect player for Dyche.

The Blues boss has been backed to turn Phillips’ career around [Alex Crook, 23 July], and with both player and club needing something new next season, Dyche should push the button on a loan move as soon as possible.

In other Everton news, the Toffees could be put on red alert after a Scott McTominay update emerged at Manchester United.
