Tottenham will be without Cristian Romero for six weeks following the muscle injury he picked up against Chelsea, according to Gaston Edul.
The Argentine journalist posted on X (9 December) that while Romero has recovered from a previous injury in his foot, the centre-back pulling his groin after just 15 minutes has had serious ramifications.
Romero being ruled out for six weeks means he won’t be back in first-team contention until the end of January, likely to miss nine games in all competitions including seven Premier League fixtures.
Edul said: “Cuti Romero has a muscle injury, not in his foot. He has recovered from that injury.
“He will be out for six weeks.”
Tottenham hit with crushing Cristian Romero injury blow
There’s no denying that while Romero can be quite the erratic defender at times, his presence in the team still makes Spurs a markedly better team, particularly when partnered by Micky van de Ven.
After injuries forced both of his first-choice centre-backs off against Chelsea on Sunday, Ange Postecoglou’s side fell apart, having gone 2-0 up just four minutes before Romero’s early withdrawal.
Finding a way to stem the flow of goals that have flown past the Lilywhites’ leaky defence in recent weeks without Romero, who had only just returned to the side, is now Postecoglou’s number one priority.
As he did with the Argentina international on the sidelines, Radu Dragusin will likely deputise in the right-centre-back role until Romero’s return, by which time Spurs could be even further adrift of the fop four.
Minus Romero, Postecoglou’s side have shipped goals at will – particularly against Chelsea – and if his absence is felt just as badly this time around, ‘Cuti’s natural successor will need to emerge.
In other Tottenham news, former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp laid into one player’s “schoolboy” defending against Chelsea.
