Brighton striker Danny Welbeck has played down suggestions of a surprise return to Manchester United.

The 33-year-old has been in superb form for Brighton this season, scoring six goals in the Premier League so far.

Welbeck came through United’s academy and made 142 first-team appearances before he was sold to Arsenal for £16 million in 2014.

Earlier this month, reports claimed that Erik ten Hag was keen on bringing Welbeck back to Old Trafford with United looking to sign a new striker in the summer transfer window.

When asked about being linked with a return to United, Welbeck said in an interview with The Times: ‘It’s speculation and there’s always that link for me because I’ve been at the club.

‘As I said, I’m just focusing on what I can control myself and all the other stuff is pretty irrelevant.’

Last month, Gary Neville was adamant that United should never have sold Welbeck.

‘He’s in better form than any of the United front players, by far,’ Neville said on The Overlap.

‘Danny Welbeck, to be fair, should never have been let go at United.

‘If you’ve got a squad of 24, 23, and you want to keep five or six strikers, he’s got to be one of those. You’ve got to keep him.’
