Darren Bent has compared Sean Dyche to Erik ten Hag while admitting he still believes Everton will survive relegation this season.
The Toffees began the game brightly at Old Trafford on Sunday 1 December, creating multiple chances to go ahead away from home, and that was the main issue that the talkSPORT pundit raised.
While Dyche’s football is often criticised by the Goodison Park faithful, Beto and Dwight McNeil should failed to take their chances, especially in the early stages of the game.
Speaking live via talkSPORT [2 December, 4:14pm], Bent said: “They’re having a real tough time at the minute, and the football they play is not easy on the eye. When I look at their squad, I think yes [they should avoid relegation].
“Branthwaite has come back from injury, Ashley Young has the experience, Jack Harrison’s there, Dwight McNeil’s a good player, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, you’d think he can score goals, England’s No.1 in goal, Jordan Pickford.
“Looking at Everton’s xG of 14, they’ve scored 10 so they’re below where they should be. They’re creative opportunities, getting themselves into good positions, but they just can’t finish.
“It’s a little bit like Ten Hag. At the West Ham game [v Manchester United], they created chance after chance but still got beaten. There’s a bit of Sean Dyche in that.
“They’re not going to do anything drastic now like get rid of Sean Dyche. He still gives them the best chance of staying up.”
Does Darren Bent have a point about Sean Dyche and xG at Everton?
The manager is quickly sinking as the Toffees drift further and further down the Premier League table, and his strikers’ lack of ability in front of goal is certainly not helping.
Calvert-Lewin and Beto have both struggled in the final third, the former especially over the last few seasons, and nothing has really changed upfront this term.
Iliman Ndiaye’s introduction was seen as an attacking saviour during the summer transfer window, and although he has been exciting to watch, he only has two Premier League goals to show for it.
If Dyche cannot change the current style and get his players hitting the target more often, the club will have no choice but to rip up his contract, and that may only cost £3million [The Esk].
The next few fixtures will be very telling for Dyche’s future on Merseyside, with games against the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City, and they could be his final moments in charge.
In other Everton news, Richard Keys has mooted a possible “full-blown crisis” at Goodison Park within days.
