It’s been over 12 months since David de Gea left Manchester United, but he’s still yet to make his return to football. He hopes to agree terms with a new club before the start of the 2024-25 season, but right now, the chances of that happening are slim.
De Gea’s most likely destination is Italy. Last week, he was strongly linked with Genoa, although they opted not to sign him after failing to agree personal terms. Since then, Fiorentina have looked into the possibility of signing him, but again, a deal appears unlikely at this stage.
The reason for this is de Gea’s “unacceptable” wage demands, according to TEAMtalk. The 33-year-old wants to earn a salary of £5m per year – much less than the £19.5m he earned every season at Man Utd – but it is far too much for Fiorentina.
De Gea must now consider whether to drastically reduce his salary demands in order to secure a return to European football. If he chooses not to, a move to Saudi Arabia would be his best bet, as he’d likely earn a lucrative contract in the Middle East.
