'Diabolical' - Alan Brazil lambasts what he saw at Hampden during Rangers v Celtic

Alan Brazil blasted the “diabolical” defending on display from Rangers and Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final.

The Gers played out a 3-3 draw at Hampden Park after 120 minutes of action on Sunday [15 December] but failed to claim consecutive League Cup triumphs as Ridvan Yilmaz missed the decisive spot-kick in the penalty shootout.

However, Brazil laid into the Glaswegian sides for their defending while speaking live on talkSPORT [18 December, 6:07am], while co-host Ally McCoist believes the contest was an entertaining watch for neutrals.

Brazil said: “The defending was diabolical, but it was some game.”

McCoist added: “If ever there was an advert to get fans back into stadiums… it was brilliant. 50-50, the atmosphere – what a game.”

Rangers will rue missed chances after cup final controversy v Celtic

The Scottish League Cup final was the perfect advert for Scottish football, with the two most decorated sides going head-to-head.

Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn thought he won the final for Celtic after his 87th-minute strike, before Danilo pulled level for Rangers a minute later to send the contest into extra time.

However, as always seems to be the case with the modern game, VAR controversy has shrouded the result.

Liam Scales brought down Vaclav Cerny on the edge of the penalty area in the final 30 minutes, with referee John Beaton awarding the Gers a free-kick – TV replays show the foul took place inside the opposition box, though.

As a result, Scottish FA officials Alan Muir and Frank O’Connor have been axed from duty ahead of the Scottish Premiership weekend [Daily Record].

The SFA has ultimately admitted fault for the decision and has tainted what should have been – as McCoist noted – a great advert for Scottish football and denied Rangers consecutive League Cup triumphs.

In other Rangers news, the Gers will pay an ‘absolute fortune’ for player in 2025 according to Chris Sutton.
