Lee Dixon was frustrated with Jordan Pickford when the Everton goalkeeper opted to roll the ball out instead of kicking it late in the first half of England’s encounter with Ireland on Sunday.

Pickford was a spectator for England in the encounter with the Three Lions dominating possession while looking toothless in the opposition half in the first 45.

At one point late in the opening period, Pickford opted to roll the ball out after collecting a cross from Festy Ebosele instead of mixing it up with a long punt forward, baffling Dixon.

Speaking on ITV’s live coverage of the game on 17 November, he said: “I’d have kicked that as well, just something different, as soon as you don’t kick it and roll it out, Ireland get back into their shape again.”

England went on to win the game 5-0, securing promotion back to the top tier of the Nations League.

Jordan Pickford a spectator for England

Especially during the first half, Pickford was a spectator and perhaps from an Everton point of view, that will be what they want.

Pickford has been a crucial player for Everton, arguably single-handedly keeping them up one season and he will play a similar role in the remainder of the season.

One of, if not his best attributes is his distribution. Pickford is outstanding with the ball at his feet and is capable of creating goal-scoring opportunities from the comfort of his own box. Something which was severely limited in England’s encounter with Ireland.

Whether tactical or personal, the decision throughout the majority of the game was to play the ball from the back, against an Ireland team that just got straight back into position on each occasion.

If England aren’t going to utilise Pickford’s biggest advantages, it serves a small benefit for Everton with the minimal chance of injury reduced even further.

In other Everton news, Dwight McNeil remains a major doubt for the Brentford clash with the possibility still occuring of a new injury.
