Les Roberts of The Blue Room podcast has blasted Sean Dyche over his decision to play Michael Keane up front as Everton lost to Southampton on Saturday.
An 85th-minute goal from Adam Armstrong saw the Saints claim their first Premier League win of the season at the expense of the Toffees at St. Mary’s on Saturday, 2 November.
In a last-ditch attempt to salvage a point, Dyche replaced Jesper Lindstrom with Jarrad Branthwaite and instructed Keane to play up top.
Roberts thought the move was a “disaster” and labelled it as a mere “panic measure”, while also slamming Dyche for not getting the best out of his players.
“He’s got more options than he had last season this season and he just doesn’t seem to be using them effectively”, Roberts said on BBC Radio Merseyside (2 November).
“I know we’ve made the chances today, we’ve not taken them, but, as I said, he’s too reactive to stuff.
“He won’t change things or he won’t give different players a different going, different roles to try and make something happen.
“It’s getting to the point where it’s very much like Mick Lyons in the 70s, just chuck them up front to him when we’re in trouble and see what happens.
“There’s no real thought in that, it’s just a bit of a panic measure. Get it in the mixer, all that nonsense, so it does feel like he’s just not doing enough.
“He’s paid very well to do that job, he’s got some good players at his disposal and he’s just not getting enough out of them. That today was a disaster.”
Sean Dyche under pressure after Everton loss v Southampton
The mood at Goodison was better before Saturday with Everton stringing together a five-game unbeaten run. However, the defeat at St. Mary’s has seen questions being asked of Dyche again.
Dyche’s decisions before and during the game were put under the microscope, with his call to start Branthwaite on the bench also coming under scrutiny.
This shows how one bad result puts a Premier League manager under severe pressure and the Englishman must now react quickly.
He will have the opportunity to set things straight when Everton face West Ham United at the London Stadium next Saturday (9 November).
It is worth noting that the Merseyside-based club are placed sixteenth in the table after 10 games, sitting just five points above the relegation zone.
One could argue that Dyche would have been sacked by now if Farhad Moshiri was not in the process of selling the club to Dan Friedkin (The Athletic).
In other Everton news, Chris Sutton got into a heated argument with a Toffees fan live on air over a “ridiculous” claim.
