Tottenham Hotspur Women have announced that goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer has signed a new contract extending his stay with the club until 2026.

Spencer has been a stalwart between the sticks for Spurs since she arrived from West Ham United in 2019 – she is on track to mark her century of appearances at the Gaughan Group Stadium against Brighton this season.

Spurs confirmed the news via their official website on Tuesday [5 November], the 33-year-old has been an integral cog in Robert Vilahamn’s side and will continue her role as a key player this season with her long-term future secure.

Tottenham Women have secured the future of Rebecca Spencer

Spencer is one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the Women’s Super League with over a decade of top-flight experience, her extended stay is nothing short of a statement of intent from Tottenham.

Vilahamn has hardly enjoyed a smooth ride in the league this year. The 2-1 win against West Ham United on Sunday [3 November], in which Spencer produced three vital saves, ended a three-match loss streak for Spurs.

The 3-0 loss against Manchester United was a particularly low point for Tottenham after handing Liverpool their first win the week prior.

Spurs’ defensive record does not make for great reading, the Women have conceded 14 goals in only six outings in the WSL, and Vilahamn has a monumental task to overturn his side’s fortunes.

However, Ella Morris and Clare Hunt are new-look additions to the Tottenham backline following their arrivals from Southampton and Paris Saint-Germain respectively, it will take time for the defence to adapt to the style of play in North London.

Spencer is arguably the only nailed-on starter among the backline and, with a tough trip to league leaders Manchester City on Friday [8 November], she may need to replicate her FA Cup heroics against Gareth Taylor’s side to thwart top scorer Khadija Shaw.
