Dominic Calvert-Lewin is “unlikely” to join Newcastle this summer despite his wish to leave Everton, according to 90min.
Writing on their website (17 July), the news outlet reports that the striker is yet to agree personal terms with the Magpies over a deal, which is why a deal collapsed [Athletic, 29 June] earlier in the window.
Newcastle remain interested in a deal should Callum Wilson move on, but Everton expect to sell the striker [TBR, 13 July] before the window shuts anyway as he is not inclined to extend his contract [Times, 22 June] at Goodison Park which is currently due to expire next year.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin wants to leave Everton
The Toffees are in a difficult position this summer with Calvert-Lewin, because he wants to leave [Graeme Bailey, 4 July] but the club need a good fee to let him move.
The financial situation of the club means that they simply cannot afford to let him leave on a free transfer next summer, and his injury record means keeping him for that period doesn’t guarantee he can be used regularly anyway.
But agreeing a fee with clubs is always the most difficult part of a deal, and the closer Everton get to the end of the window the more panic will start to set in over this situation.
However, they must stay calm and not collapse in negotiations. Selling him for cheap won’t be worthwhile and will just make it more difficult to replace him.
An exit to Newcastle looks unlikely but there are other interested parties who could step in and get a deal done when other dominoes fall, so it’s best to just stay patient.
In other Everton news, the club have made contact to sign a Copa America star.
