Everton player now on three-man shortlist for Euro club as loan update emerges - report

Everton striker Neal Maupay is on a three-man shortlist at Marseille as they’re eyeing a new number nine, according to L’Equipe.

The French news outlet reported on 19 August that the Ligue 1 side are prioritising a loan move to replace the injured Faris Moumbagna.

The 28-year-old Toffees striker spent last season on loan at Brentford and was an unused substitute during the weekend’s game against Brighton.

Everton must include an obligation to buy if they cannot secure a permanent sale

The Toffees will be looking to recoup some of the £15million [BBC] they paid to sign the French striker in 2022.

An obligation to buy ensures that if Marseille find Maupay unsatisfactory, they are committed to purchasing him, thus offloading his long-term financial burden from Everton’s books.

From a squad perspective, Maupay’s departure on a loan without an obligation could mean he returns to Goodison Park, potentially unsettled or with his value depreciated further, complicating squad dynamics and future transfer negotiations.

This clause also acts as a safeguard against Maupay becoming a free agent at the end of his contract which will expire in the summer of 2025.

A new striker is needed in this transfer window at the Toffees and the 28-year-old is, unfortunately, not the answer.

Hopefully, he’s played his last game for the club and they can recoup something from his exit as soon as possible.
