Ex-FIFA official: Goodison at risk of damage as Everton v Liverpool postponed

Keith Hackett believes Goodison Park could be at risk of being damaged by Storm Darragh after Everton versus Liverpool was called off on Saturday.

Goodison was due to play host to its final-ever Merseyside Derby before the Blues move to their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock over the summer.

However, the Met Office has issued amber weather warnings in the area due to high winds and heavy rainfall and that’s led to the Premier League fixture being postponed.

Winds of around 80mph have been forecast to hit Liverpool, leading to former FIFA and Premier League referee Hackett worrying that an old stadium like Goodison Park could be damaged.

There is of course a cost and a general reluctance to call games off. However, some of our league clubs operate in old stadiums where roof cladding is the risk,” Hackett told Goodison News.

One other point is of course availability of train services and any problems on the road networks.

“I do think that other games will be called off.

When will Everton v Liverpool be rescheduled for?

Everton are almost midway through their final season at Goodison Park, which has played host to the Toffees since it opened in 1892.

The Grand Old Lady is a landmark of English football, having played host to some of the best footballers the world has ever seen.

However, it’s fair to say that the stadium has seen better days and most Evertonians are excited about the move to Bramley-Moore Dock, which will officially open at the start of the 2025/26 season.

It remains to be seen when the Blues and the Reds will come to blows in the final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park but the postponement is hardly good news for Sean Dyche’s side, who have been building up a head of steam after their 4-0 win over Wolves in the week.

In other Everton news, a David Moyes update has emerged along with news on Dyche’s future at Goodison Park.
