Alistair Bain has ridiculed Rangers manager Philippe Clement for suggesting that injuries to certain players are one reason the team haven’t performed well domestically.
The Gers are set to take on OGC Nice in the Europa League on 28 November away from home.
In the public pre-match press conference [Rangers Football Club, 27 November], the Belgian was asked about the reason for the Glaswegian club’s record in Europe being better than the Scottish Premiership and the 50-year-old suggested fitness issues were a reason, including Rabbi Matondo in his list.
Taking to X [27 November], football coach and scout Alistair Bain hit out at Clement’s suggestions, highlighting Matondo’s record at the Bears to make his point.
“Matondo: Of his 65 appearances, 25 have been in the starting eleven. He’s played a full 90 minutes for Rangers twice in three seasons. Averages about 1100 minutes a season, so is available for roughly 12 games,” he wrote.
“To even suggest he’d have an impact on the team is fantasy.”
Philippe Clement clutching at straws at Rangers
Since the start of the 2024/25 campaign, it has been evident that the Belgian has been struggling to get the best out of the players at his disposal.
With Rangers now 11 points off the top of the table in the league, Clement has nowhere to hide, and his ineptitude is there for everyone to see.
The 50-year-old has made some embarrassing statements in recent weeks, suggesting the Gers played well in their 2-1 defeat to Aberdeen on 30 October in the league.
It isn’t surprising to see that most of the Ibrox faithful have had enough of the former AS Monaco head coach and would like to see him leave the Glaswegian club sooner rather than later.
Time and again, Clement has relied on Cyriel Dessers despite the centre-forward showcasing his profligacy in front of goal.
The Belgian head coach might not want to admit it, but he has his favourites at the Light Blues, which is the only reason one can think of for Ianis Hagi not getting more minutes – his suspension aside – since the start of the season.
In other Rangers news, details about Frank Lampard coming to Ibrox have emerged after his new job.
