Rangers are in a position to sign Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller in January, Dan Plumley has said.
The Bears want the Fir Park sensation in January, alongside Liverpool and Celtic, but Motherwell will demand at least £4million [Daily Mail, 13 November].
Despite well-known financial issues and £17.2m losses in the recent accounts, Plumley insists that Rangers can afford to pay that fee without a massive overstretch at Ibrox.
“There is always risk built in,” the football finance expert exclusively told Ibrox News.
“I think this is where the gamble of the transfer market is laid bare, particularly with the situation in Scottish football versus English football as an example.
“If it is Rangers, Celtic and Liverpool that are in for this player, we absolutely know that Liverpool can afford that £4million, it’s almost pocket change to them.
“That puts the pressure on Rangers in this regard because actually, Rangers can also afford that £4million in terms of their finances, it’s not a massive overstretch.
Rangers to sign Lennon Miller?
“It’s more of an overstretch than it is for Liverpool, for sure, Rangers and Celtic can pay those fees so it almost becomes how much of a gamble are we taking on that particular player and do they think that is going to pay off in the long run?
“You’ve absolutely no doubt in that situation that Motherwell will hold their ground because they know the market and the financial situation of those clubs as well.
“It’s a really tricky balance and that’s the nature of the transfer market and where you’re taking that risk, so I would suggest that Rangers can afford those fees based on their power in Scottish football, but so too can Celtic.
“It does then become stick or twist, and the player will have a say in that as well.”
After plenty of changing around, Philippe Clement has recently settled on Nico Raskin and Connor Barron in midfield, but that third spot is still up for grabs.
Miller would certainly be guaranteed more game time at Ibrox than at Liverpool or Celtic, with the 18-year-old set to have a decision to make in January.
In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton reacted to a question that Kris Boyd asked him at half-time of the Gers’ clash against St Johnstone on Sunday.
