Rangers could seal a cheaper cross-border transfer for Peterborough star Kwame Poku in January, Dan Plumley has said.
English clubs may be forced to pay £6million for the winger at a tribunal, but Rangers could sign him for a snip of that with his contract up at the end of the season [Daily Record].
Plumley, a football finance expert, admitted it is possible for Rangers to seal a cut-price deal for next summer, but there is no doubt that Peterborough would dig their heels in.
“There is a possibility, yes,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.
“It’s to do with cross-border compensation fees, it’s to do with the way the English FA tribunal system works and the age of those players. There is a possibility and we have seen that in history, with Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey, so it is considerably cheaper.
“However, the other side of that equation, of course, is Peterborough’s stance and we know their chairman is quite a hard bargainer as well.
Rangers to sign Kwame Poku?
“If there are English clubs looking to do that deal, I’ve no doubt that they will be digging in and wanting that tribunal fee and they’ll have their reasons for going after that £6million figure.
“I guess file that one under the realms of possibility and it’s prinicibly due to the cross-border fees that are applicable in England versus if that player was to move to Scotland as we’ve seen with a couple of other examples.
“It will ultimately depend on Peterborough’s stance on that but history tells us it’s possible so one to keep an eye on moving into January.”
With not much money, if anything available to spend, it could go further in January if Nils Koppen is looking at smart deals such as Poku from Peterborough.
Philippe Clement is hanging on at Ibrox right now, and if he makes it through December, reinforcements will be desperately needed for the Belgian.
In other Rangers news, Clement will be lucky to avoid being sacked in December.
