Former Man United manager and club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stated that he would be open to returning to Old Trafford as manager if asked by the Premier League club.
There is a lot of speculation over the future of Erik ten Hag at the Manchester club following a very underwhelming 2023/24 campaign, which has been followed up by a slow start to the current season.
Man United continue to look very average and if the results continue the way they have been, the upcoming international break provides the Manchester club’s board with the opportunity to make a change.
Ruud van Nistelrooy would be one of the contenders to replace the Dutch coach on a temporary basis as there are not many managers to choose from at present.
Eddie Howe could also be an option as he has worked with Dan Ashworth before at Newcastle and his role at the Tyneside club is under question due to his relationship with the Magpies’ new sporting director Paul Mitchell.
Speaking recently, former Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that he would love to return to Old Trafford, but that is an option the Red Devils are unlikely to go with.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would love to return to Man United
Solskjaer has been out of management since Leaving Man United in November 2021 after almost three years in charge having initially been hired as interim manager in 2018 following the dismissal of José Mourinho.
The 51-year-old was unable to win silverware at Old Trafford during his time and his exit came following a run of six defeats in 11 games in late 2021, which included a 5-0 home defeat against Liverpool.
Solskjaer has worked as a technical observer for UEFA since leaving United but has recently admitted to being open to returning to the Premier League side amid uncertainty over the future of Ten Hag.
“If the family [United] asks, I would say yes every day of the week,” Solskjaer said in a Q&A at the Oslo Business Forum via ESPN. “It feels wrong to talk about jobs that other people have now, but I would say yes, of course.”
Man United are very unlikely to pursue the Norwegian coach should they opt to move on from Ten Hag but fans of the club will love to see the club legend still willing to help them despite being sacked by the Red Devils three years ago.
