Former Celtic and Super Eagles defender, Efetobore Eric Ambrose, has joined ninth-tier English side, Bury Football Club on a free transfer, Soccernet.ng reports.

A well-travelled and vastly experienced defender, Ambrose joins Bury as his 12th club in his 18-year career. He has played for Katsina United, Bayelsa United, Ashdod, Celtic, Hibernian, Derby County, Livingston, St Johnstone, Dunfermline Athletic, Greenock Morton, Queen of the South, and now, non-league side, Bury.

Popularly called the Shakers, ninth-tier Bury FC were expelled from the English Football League due to financial constraints. Their place now sits in the Premier Division of the North West Counties League, the ninth tier of the English football pyramid. This is after FA approval of a merger with Phoenix club Bury AFC.

Ambrose was a part of the Super Eagles team that won the 2013 AFCON tournament in South Africa alongside Kenneth Omeruo and Ahmed Musa, under the tutelage of the late Stephen Keshi.

Bury are starting afresh, and have already made twelve signings ahead of the upcoming season, as they look to regain their place amongst the minnows of English Football.

Speaking on the signature of Ambrose, the club’s coach, David McNabb said he was thrilled to have secured the services of the versatile defender.

“A ball-playing centre-half with an unbelievable pedigree, huge experience, over 50 international caps, and over 400 professional appearances. Efe is a great character and will certainly help some of the younger players in the squad. It’s a brilliant signing for the club and one I hope will excite the fans,” the British manager said in quotes revealed by the club’s official website.

Ambrose is capable of playing as a centre-back, a right-back and as a defensive midfielder. He last played for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in 2016.
