Mo Salah was hailed as “world class” by a stunned Gary Neville after his assist for Cody Gakpo to open the scoring for Liverpool against Man City at Anfield.
Arne Slot’s side went into the game looking to extend their lead over the visitors to 11 points in the Premier League title race.
After a dominant opening to the game, they would take the lead with 12 minutes on the clock, with Salah latching on a to a long ball forward on the byline inside the Man City area.
The Liverpool talisman then produced a pinpoint pass to the far post, where Gakpo has the easiest of tasks in tapping home from a couple of yards out to make it 1-0, with the embattled Kyle Walker lost.
Giving his description of the Liverpool goal while co-commentating on Sky Sports (16:13), Neville said: “What a 12 minutes of football we’ve just watched, culminating in quality. That City team, they’ve got a lot of work to do, they look absolutely beat. He tries to clap them up Pep Guardiola, but blood is being smelt.
“And that back four of City’s they push up the pitch, and the time on the ball, they don’t themselves any favours, they’re tunning back in mud. And this is just world class. That is unbelievable from Mo Salah.
“He looks up, he looks at Akanji, he’s nowhere near him he doesn’t try to block him, Ortega can’t get there, and Gakpo in off that left-hand side.”
Watching a replay of the goal, Neville was unimpressed by the defending of Walker in not marking Gakpo, something he insisted did not detract from the work of the Liverpool winger, adding: “Kyle Walker doesn’t know that he’s there Cody Gakpo, Vision, precision and brilliance from Salah to spot that pass and make that cross.”
Mo Salah reiterates importance of a new Liverpool contract
Football Insider Opinion
There has been plenty of talk in the last week or so about Salah being out of contract at Anfield next summer, and his own comments on the situation.
Moments like this though, prove just how crucial it is for the club to agree a new deal for the Egyptian.
Even at 32-years-old, he is still absolutely vital to everything that Liverpool do, and so keeping him will be a massive boost to the clear ambitions of winning silverware they will have.
Allowing him to leave on a free transfer – as is currently a possibility in the summer – would be even more of a kick in the teeth, given how hard it will be to replace if he departs, even with targets identified.
Massive questions would certainly be asked were that to happen when there has been so much time to address, and given it is obvious how much they still need him.
With that in mind, Liverpool have just been given another reminder against Man City, of how much they do need to secure a new contract for Salah as soon as they can.
