Lucas Bergvall had Ally McCoist and Glenn Hoddle both in agreement over his cameo off the bench in Tottenham Hotspur’s draw with Rangers.
Tottenham were held to a 1-1 tie with Rangers at Ibrox in what was a decent point in the end for Ange Postecoglou’s team. The Scottish giants caused Spurs many problems in this key Europa League clash.
The Lilywhites struggled until Postecoglou’s substitutions which helped swing the game back in their favour. Bergvall was one of the players who came off the bench and the teenager really proved himself.
Ally McCoist and Glenn Hoddle praise Lucas Bergvall vs Rangers
Ally McCoist and Glenn Hoddle both sang the praises of Lucas Bergvall as he helped Tottenham get back into the game against Rangers. Spurs’ midfield trio of Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison failed to grab a hold of the game and that changed when Postecoglou introduced the young Swede and Dejan Kulusevski.
The 18-year-old was tasked with helping the Lilywhites regain some control of the game in Glasgow and in fairness to Bergvall, he did exactly that. Hoddle was impressed by how confident he looked on the ball, meanwhile, McCoist said he kept managing to make so much time and space on the ball for himself.
Hoddle told TNT Sports: “I think young Bergvall looks good. Looks really good. He looks confident. It’s the first time I have seen him come on and be a bit adventurous with the passing.” McCoist added: “He’s one of those boys who always looks like has a bit of time. He always makes a bit of time and space for himself.”
How did Lucas Bergvall compare to James Maddison vs Rangers?
James Maddison was once again lacklustre against Rangers and Bergvall just looked more effective than the England international. The teenager moved the ball much quicker than Maddison and this helped Spurs to look a lot more lively.
Bergvall’s passing ability especially stood against Philippe Clementes’ team, as Hoddle pointed out, with the midfielder attempting some audacious switches throughout his 29-minute cameo. He completed 27 of his 28 passes showing what a good job he did in a hostile atmosphere.
Stat James Maddison Lucas Bergvall Minutes 90 29 Touches 73 35 Accurate passes 51/59 (86%) 27/28 (96%) Key passes 2 0 Ground duels (won) 7 (6) 9 (4) Aerial duels (won) 0 (0) 1 (1) Tackles 1 3
Tottenham will be without Bissouma and Bentancur who are suspended in the Premier League and Postecoglou should trust Bergvall to start away at Southampton.
