Pat Bonner has slammed Hamza Igamane for the concession of the first goal for Celtic against Rangers.
The former Celtic goalkeeper wanted him to be sharper at the edge of the box along with some of his other teammates at Hampden Park on Sunday, 15 December.
The Hoops ended up winning on penalties to clinch the Scottish League Cup title after the score was 3-3.
Bonner told BBC on 15 December at 16:51: “Igamane maybe going to sleep on the edge of the box, not doing his job. It comes off Raskin and Butland has no chance. That’s when you want the boys on the edge of the box to just to be sharp, know what they’re doing, don’t go to sleep.”
Hamza Igamane cannot be blamed for the Rangers loss
It seems somewhat harsh to single out Igamane for the first goal conceded as football is a collective sport where mistakes are often shared.
While Bonner criticised the Ivorian for potentially being “asleep” at the edge of the box, it’s important to consider the context of the game.
Even if the striker did play a part in the goal, he later redeemed himself by contributing significantly at the other end.
He was instrumental in two goals, showing alertness and skill which helped Gers in their fightback.
Unlike some teammates who might not have had as impactful moments, the 22-year-old’s actions throughout the match suggest that singling him out for one defensive lapse misses the broader picture of his overall performance.
Igamane is quickly becoming one of the club’s most important players and Clement certainly will be glad to see this output.
In other Rangers news, an £8million update has emerged as the club have made a decision on Castore ahead of next season.
