Paul Robinson believes Cristian Romero’s potential contract extension can only be good news for Tottenham this season.
Spurs have set their eyes on making the Argentine the highest earner at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the centre-back expected to be handed a new wage of £200,000-a-week [GiveMeSport, 17 September].
Romero was the subject of transfer interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid during the summer transfer window [Evening Standard], which makes the new contract all the more important for Ange Postecoglou.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “If you’re going to give a player a pay rise, you can’t do that without extending their contract, which is good news for Tottenham. He and Micky van de Ven have been key.
“He brings grit and determination, and that little bit of bite they might not have otherwise. I think he’s a leader on the pitch, though not vocally. To tie him down to a longer-term contract is only good news.”
Cristian Romero must remain at Tottenham as main defender
Romero and van de Ven have created one of the most formidable defensive partnerships in the Premier League, though they do come under some criticism for Postecoglou’s tactics.
While Radu Dragusin is the replacement for either star, both sets of shoes are extremely difficult to fill, as proven by the Romanian’s red card in the Europa League clash versus Qarabag.
Some fans may deem the rise in salary unjust, given Romero can be known for lashing out or slip-ups, but if clubs such as Real Madrid are lurking, Spurs really have no other option but to keep him happy.
Postecoglou looks to be building something special in North London and it is important the 26-year-old stays alongside van de Ven in the backline as Spurs push up the Premier League table and compete in Europe.
In other Tottenham news, one ace is nowhere near a starting XI spot after Ange Postecoglou was “raging” at him v Manchester United.
