Graeme Souness believes that Rangers need an injection of money into the club to bridge the gap with Celtic.
The former Gers manager is of the opinion that the Hoops have better strikers while he was left gushing over Hamza Igamane.
This comes after he bagged a brace in the club’s 4-1 win over Nice on 28 November.
Souness said, via the Daily Record on 30 November: “I believe Rangers need an injection of money to help the manager to do his job which he’s more than capable of doing if he had the resources. Right now he’s managing a group of players who are behind Celtic and I’ll be criticised for saying this but I don’t see any great gulf between the two teams. I was at an Old Firm cup final last season and a league game between them last season and didn’t see one team out-footballing the other team,
“What I do see is Celtic having players who do the most important thing and that is being able to consistently put the ball into the net more than Rangers do.
“I get frustrated watching games of football when it’s teams I have a strong affection for but the display against Nice was much more like the standard Rangers have set during European games in recent seasons.
“Igamane was excellent and put his hand up as a good option for one of the striking roles and it was great to see. You can’t underestimate the achievement of winning in the manner Rangers did in Nice and that should be a shot in the arm for everyone at the club.”
Rangers need to start spending money on the right kind of players
Even when funds have been available, Gers have not always spent wisely, highlighting clear structural issues.
Past transfer windows have seen the club bring in players who, despite the financial outlay, did not meet the expectations or tactical needs of the team, often leading to an ill-fitting squad.
While Igamane’s brace against Nice marks a promising start, it’s premature to label him as the solution to the team’s goal-scoring woes.
Philippe Clement faces the challenge of integrating these signings effectively into the team’s system.
The key for Gers isn’t just acquiring talent but ensuring that these players are the right fit for the club’s philosophy and the manager’s style of play.
Clement needs to work on extracting consistent performances from his squad, refining tactics to suit their strengths and make things happen in the future.
In other Rangers news, a BBC pundit has mooted a Gers transfer for a striker who’s scored 207 goals in his career.
