Marc Cucurella says Erling Haaland took his song ‘a little personally’ and the lyrics were taken ‘out of context’ by the Manchester City striker.

The Chelsea man was one of the surprise stars of Euro 2024 earlier this summer and a song dedicated to the defender began growing in popularity in Spain as Luis de la Fuente’s men progressed further in the tournament.

In the aftermath of La Roja’s victory over England in the European Championship final, Cucurella was himself filmed belting out the lyrics, first at the team hotel and again during the squad’s celebrations on their return home to Madrid.

‘Cucu, Cucurella, he eats paella, Cucu, Cucurella he drinks Estrella, Haaland you’d better tremble as Cucurella is coming,’ the Chelsea full-back sang to great cheers from his team-mates.

But perhaps unsurprisingly, Haaland appeared less than impressed when asked about Cucurella’s antics in the wake of City’s 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge last month.

‘It was an interesting song, that, from that guy [Cucurella],’ Haaland told the BBC’s Match of the Day programme.

‘There’s not that much to say. I don’t really think about that. He can do what he wants.

‘Last year he asked me for my jersey, and then he starts singing about me.’

While Cucurella’s song backfired somewhat at Stamford Bridge, with Haaland evading his advances to score City’s opening goal, he is adamant he would sing it again.

‘A lot of attention was given to that and these things happen,’ Cucurella told EFE ahead of Spain’s Nations League opener with Serbia.

‘I am very happy and I think that if someone has a song sung with his name it is because he is a top player or a world star, the name of a player who is not known would not be used.

‘Everyone is happy because he scored and I am still just as happy to win the Euros. I would do it again, these things happen and that is all.’

According to Cucurella, Cole Palmer spoke with Haaland about the song at an awards ceremony and there is no issue to speak of between himself and the Norwegian.

‘In the end, in England they took it a little out of context and I don’t think he understood it either,’ he added.

‘He read what they said and took it a little personally.

‘Nowadays people take things very personally, but then they had some awards and my colleague Palmer asked him about me and that was it. It was just an anecdote.’

Cucurella suggests the media attempted to stir up controversy by asking Haaland about the song following City’s victory over Chelsea.

‘They also asked him the question on purpose after winning the match to create controversy,’ he continued.

‘That’s all, it doesn’t affect me at all, everyone does their thing, he’s scoring goals and we’re winning the Euros.

‘Everyone has their own life and I’m very happy that things are going well for him because he’s a great player and I’m doing my thing.’
