'Head on a Plate' - Pundit issues Rangers sack verdict as Clement 'Like Ten Hag'

Philippe Clement is only two bad Rangers results away from a “full scale” sack campaign developing among the fanbase, according to Tam McManus.

The pundit said on PLZ Soccer’s YouTube channel on 28 October that the Ibrox boss is far from safe from pressure on his job, with supporters likely to want his “head on a plate” with a pair of poor games sa he walks the same tightrope as Erik ten Hag, after the Manchester United boss was sacked the same day.

Losing 1-0 at Kilmarnock on 20 October put the Belgian’s position in the spotlight again, and despite a substantial response in the following game with a 4-0 win over FCSB the Gers regressed badly again back in domestic action in the 2-1 win over St Mirren on 27 October, with a crucial trip to Aberdeen up next three days later.

Host Peter Martin asked (22m): “Is Clement like Ten Hag? Is he walking that tightrope?”

McManus replied: “I think he is. I think they’re one or two bad results away from full-scale wanting his head on a plate. They’re winning games just now. They’ve just got to win. It’s as simple as that.”

Rangers boss to follow Manchester United sacking?

From the outside it looks pretty accurate that if Clement’s Gers side follow up their damp squib of a win over St Mirren with a similar performance at Pittodrie then the pressure will erupt again.

Facing an Aberdeen side which is already six points above the Light Blues, in a game McManus says is “massive”, is likely to end in defeat if the visitors don’t raise their game significantly.

And based on how the season has gone so far that defeat might be more reminiscent of the catastrophic 3-0 thrashing at Celtic on 1 September than the limp 1-0 reverse at the hands of Derek McInnes’ Kilmarnock on 20 October that launched Clement’s job back into the spotlight and had his opposite number tipped as the replacement.

Given the major fallout from the Old Firm derby it would give Clement plenty more to weather, but the club itself doesn’t seem to be of a mind to make a change.

Having made the decision ahead of the season to stick with a manager in order to end the cycle of hiring and firing [The Herald, 27 July] they are arguably right not to waver in that stance, or else undercut everything over the past few months.

But, whether the current struggles are the fault of the manager, the players, or the general running of the club in recent years, Clement’s reputation has taken a number of hits within his own fanbase already.

In other Rangers news, a high-profile Gers international has been told he has to leave the club.
