‘Here’s the rub...’ – Simon Jordan shares Everton verdict as TFG close on takeover

Dan Friedkin’s takeover will see Everton become the latest club to join the American model of “media and profit opportunities”, Simon Jordan has said.

Writing in the Daily Mail (4 December), Jordan questioned whether the US ownership model of running clubs purely as a business is “more palatable” than Gulf states .

Jordan said: “By far the most prevalent kind of owner these days comes from the USA, who want to make money and run their clubs as a business to ultimately create media and profit opportunities.

“If Daniel Friedkin’s group complete their takeover at Everton, half the Premier League will be American-led. Is their model more palatable?

“It’s not a binary call but here’s the rub – once you’ve opened the Premier League for business as we’ve done, you can’t stop it.”

While the most diehard of Toffees fans won’t be happy to see their club become a vehicle for media and profit opportunities, it’s certainly preferable to the haphazard ownership of Farhad Moshiri.

Although 777 Partners’ botched takeover attempt has proven to be a massive bullet dodged – even though they remain intertwined with the Blues’ finances – Moshiri’s tenure has become untenable.

As a result, Evertonians will be looking forward to joining the soon-to-be club of 10 teams owned by American financiers, given the success of several sides who have been transformed by US investment.

High-flying Arsenal and Chelsea are just two examples of how clubs backed by US financial capital can compete in the upper echelons of the table – as are the club who play on the other side of Stanley Park.

Friedkin has the money to turn the Toffees into a side capable of becoming a Premier League force once more, and with the new era beckoning, optimism is high at Goodison for the first time in a long time.

In other Everton news, Sam Allardyce has given his verdict on the two paths the Toffees could take at the end of this season.
