Scott Wright isn’t good enough for Rangers and have proven so repeatedly despite still getting starts, according to David Edgar.
The Heart & Hand host reacted via X on 6 August as the Gers wide man was substituted at half-time in the 1-1 draw against Dynamo Kyiv, after he also came off in the 60th minute of the goalless draw at Hearts on the opening day (3 August).
He blasted manager Philippe Clement for still giving the 26-year-old opportunities, asking: “How many times does Wright need to be subbed at half-time before the penny drops?”
Asked who he was directing that at: “Clement – he’s not picking himself. He isn’t good enough, it’s proven time after time but there he was starting again.”
Todd Cantwell, Ianis Hagi and Alex Lowry in Rangers B Team
Wright’s Light Blues career looked like it had already come to an end a year ago when a departure to Pendikspor appeared to have been put in place for £500,000.
But the Scot himself didn’t seem especially convinced when he was caught by Sky Sports at the airport on the way out and the move duly fell through.
This summer he again appears to be a prime candidate to leave if the right offer comes in and is believed to have multiple clubs in England and overseas interested [Darren Witcoop, 23 July].
But the campaign is now underway and he has started both matches so an offer cannot have materialised, with Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday both said to have FFP concerns [TEAMtalk, 23 July].
When it has proven such heavy going to move on players who do stand out more often it is perhaps no surprise that it has been harder with one who often seems to float through games without making much impact.
He has the ability, as he showed with an excellent performance against Benfica in the Europa League last season, but such occasions are few and far between.
That he is getting starts clearly has something to do with the fact that the likes of Todd Cantwell, Fiorentina-linked Ianis Hagi and youngster Alex Lowry are all seemingly closer to an exit and with the B Team.
Once Vaclav Cerny is deemed up to speed he will be in the XI, and after his introduction against Kyiv Jefte might be as well.
But Wright is one of a number of Rangers players who have enough quality to show it on occasion but few would notice if they moved on, including the likes of Kieran Dowell and Ben Davies.
In other Rangers news, another Light Blues starter is being pushed to accept an exit offer.
