'I Can Tell You This' - Keith Wyness drops verdict on Everton signing spree under Friedkin

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the priority for prospective new owner Dan Friedkin will be to “clean up” the club’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) woes.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Toffees will not be given an “open chequebook” to do big business this summer.

Everton confirmed on Friday (21 June) that a period of exclusivity has been granted to The Friedkin Group to acquire a majority shareholding from Farhad Moshiri.

777 Partners and MSP Sports Capital have also struck similar agreements in the past but have been unable to seal a takeover.

Friedkin has owned Italian side Roma since 2020, with the Italian club winning the Europa Conference League under Jose Mourinho two years later.

Everton won’t get ‘open chequebook’ under Friedkin, says Wyness

Everton are still under threat of breaching PSR and incurring another points deduction with the end of the 2023-24 accounting period coming on 30 June.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I can tell you this, we’ve got to look at the PSR issue first of all, and that’s got to be completely cleaned up.

“That will depend on the equity Friedkin puts in and how it’s structured.

“He hasn’t got carried away at Roma, or given them an open chequebook. Nor should he, no one expects him to.

“To run the club prudently and make good football decisions will be the most important thing.

“I’m sure he will then support us with what is needed to strengthen the squad appropriately.

“I’ve said all along that this season is about staying in the Premier League before the new stadium opens next year.

“Everton have got to maintain Premier League status. That is absolutely crucial to the move in 2025.”
